Welcome to another new post. In this opportunity, I come to bring you a VERY COMPLETE and simple guide on how to install Windows 95 successfully in a virtual machine, using VirtualBox. It is so simple and comprehensive that I bet even an adult who doesn't know how to install Windows 95 can understand it. It was originally a job from my school, but I decided to share it. Without further ado, let's go!
How to install Windows 95 in VirtualBox, complete guide
Welcome to this comprehensive guide on how to install Windows 95. First of all, you should have Sun xVM VirtualBox in its version 3.0, the program that will help us in this guide. May check the following link to download that program in case you don't have it installed.
You must also have the necessary files for this tutorial.
The files are in RAR format; a compressed file format. You must have a special program to be able to decipher them.
When you meet these 3 requirements, we can continue with the installation of Windows 98.
Create the virtual machine
Before we can install Windows 95, we will first create the virtual machine:
Step 1: Open the program Sun xVM Virtual Box, which will be found on your computer desktop.
Step 2: Click on the "New" icon, located at the top left of the program:
Step 4: Click Next".
Step 5: A window will open for you. You will see that there are different sections:
- Name: enter the name of the system to install. In this case, the field goes with "Windows 95".
- Type: Leave that section as is (on Microsoft Windows).
- Version: pull down the menu and choose the option "Windows 95".
Then click "Next".
Step 6: On the next slide, it asks you for the memory size. Leave the default field at 64 MB, and then click "Next".
Step 7: Then, check the box "Boot Hard Disk (Primary Master)", and select the option "Create new Virtual Disk".
Step 8: A pop-up window will open for you. Click Next".
Step 9: Select the "Dynamic Expansion Storage" option, and click "Next."
Step 10: Select the location of the file. By default, that value is "Win95", but if you want to change it, you can. In the field called "Size (S)", it is recommended to set the value between 2.00 GB and 10 GB, but it will depend on the task to which that computer is assigned. When you're ready, click "Next."
Step 11: Click on "Finish", then, in the same way, on "Finish".
Step 12: The window will close. You can see that on the left side of the program a new section has been added. Select it.
Step 13: After that, go to the “Configuration” section (it is found in the upper left part of the program).
Step 14: Now, go to the “System” submenu, and go to the “Acceleration” section.
Step 15: Disable the "Enable VT-x / AMD-V" option.
Step 16: Access the submenu "Diskette" (left section of the window), and click on "Mount Floppy Drive".
Step 17: Select the "Image File" option, and then select the folder icon, which is located on the right side of that section.
Step 18: Click on the "Add" icon. Now, locate the file “Windows95.img”, which you downloaded from the add-ons in this guide, select it and click “Open”.
Step 19: The file will be added. Now, click on "Select."
Step 20: Now, go to the "CD / DVD-ROM" submenu, and click on "Mount CD / DVD drive".
Step 21: Click on “ISO Image File”, and likewise click on the file icon on the right side.
Step 22: Click "Add", locate the file "Windows 95 OSR 2.5.iso", select it, and click "Open".
Step 23: It will be added. Click "Select."
Step 24: Ready. Now, click on "OK" in the configuration section of that virtual machine.
Step 25: Then in the upper left, click "Start" (green arrow sign).
Step 26: When you load the terminal, you will see the following section “A: \>”. Enter the command "fdisk", and press Enter.
Step 27: Now, enter the "Y" key, and press Enter.
Step 28: Now, enter "1", and press Enter.
Step 29: Then press "1" again, and press Enter.
Step 30: Now, do type "Y", and press Enter.
Step 31: We have partitioned the disk. Now, there are some menus in the upper left of your window. Click on "Machine", and then click on "Restart".
Step 32: A confirmation window will appear. Click "Restart."
Step 33: Wait for the expression "A: \>". When you see it, enter the command "format C:" and press Enter.
Step 34: Now, wait a minute. When you see the expression “Proceed with format (Y / N)?”, Type “Y”, and press Enter.
Step 35: Wait a moment. When you see “Volume label (11 characters, ENTER for none)”, enter a name, such as “Windows”, and press Enter.
Step 36: You will see the section "A: \>" again. Enter "C:", and press Enter. Note that it will change from "A: \>" to "C: \>".
Step 37: Enter the command "mkdir win95", this will create a folder on the system called "win95".
Step 38: Now enter "R:". Note that "C: \>" has been changed to "R: \>".
Step 39: Enter the command "dir". You will see that there is a name, followed by “ Keep that in mind, as we will use it.
Step 40: Enter the command "copy [directory that I told you to remember] C: \[folder created with mkdir]”. The sections in bold are to change. Then when you're ready, hit Enter.
Step 41: Wait a moment. When you see "R: \>", enter "C:".
Step 42: Enter "dir" again, to see the directory listing. You will see that there is a name, followed on the left you will find “ ”. Keep it in mind.
Step 43: Enter "cd [folder you saw earlier]”. Texts in bold are to replace. Then press Enter.
Step 44: Type the command "install", and press Enter.
Step 45: Wait again, and press Enter again.
Step 46: Wait a moment. When you see a section that says "Installing Windows 95", we will begin with the next step.
Step 47: Click "Continue," and wait.
Step 48: Read and accept the terms.
Step 49: Click Next".
Step 50: Leave the default value of “C: \ WINDOWS”, and click “Next”.
Step 51: Wait a moment. Now, click on "Typical", and click "Next."
Step 52: Enter the serial number that you downloaded from the files of this manual. When you're ready, click "Next."
Step 53: Now, Enter a name and a corporation and click "Next".
Step 54: Select both options and click "Next."
Step 55: Wait a moment. Now, select "Install frequently used components", and click "Next".
Step 56: Now, click on "Do not create bootable hard disk", and click on "Next".
Step 57: Wait a moment. When you see the text “Finishing the installation”, click on “Finish”. Click "OK" on the window that appears.
Step 58: Now Windows 95 will restart, please wait. Then, in the box that tells you to enter a name for the PC, click "OK".
Step 59: Now, click on the "Identification" menu, and fill in the required fields: "PC Name", "Workgroup" and "PC Description". When finished, click on the "Settings" menu.
Step 60: Under the white box, click on "Add", then click on "Protocol", and press "Add ...".
Step 61: Select the left section called "Microsoft", and, on the right side, select "TCP / IP". When you're ready, click "OK."
Step 62: The window will close. Now, click on “Close” from the window where you entered “Settings”.
Step 63: Wait a moment. When a small window appears that says "Installing Windows 95", wait until the text that says "Time Zone" is in bold. When that happens, a window will open to configure the time zone; select it. Similarly in the "Date and time" menu, set the current time. When you're ready, click "Apply."
Step 64: Click "Cancel" in the printer settings, as for the purpose of this guide, we will not do this.
Step 65: A window will open for you. Click "OK" so that Windows 95 restarts.
Step 66: Wait. When uploading, a window will open to set a username and password, add them. These are required to protect the login when entering the computer when it is turned on. When you're ready, click "OK."
Step 67: Then re-enter the same password that you entered in the previous step. When you are ready, click "OK" again.
Step 68: Wait for the desktop to load. When that happens, you will get a window of completion of the installation, and installation of Internet Explorer 4.0. Click Next".
Step 69: Now select your country of origin. When you're ready, click "Next."
Step 70: Please wait for the installation to complete, it may take a while. When finished, the desktop will load completely, and you will have completed the guide on how to install Windows 95.
